The Beginner's Guide to Pilates & Yoga: From "Nervous" to "Nourished" at Awaken

Updated: Oct 23

We’ve all been there. You want to try something new, to move your body in a way that feels good, but you’re stuck. Walking into a new studio can be intimidating. What if you don't know the moves? What if you’re not "fit enough"?

Let’s put that myth to rest right now: Pilates and Yoga are for every body.

If you’ve been curious about starting, you’re in the right place. Here in Perth's northern suburbs, our studios in Yanchep, Ashby, and Mindarie are built on a single idea: community over competition. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from which class to choose to what to wear, so you can walk through our doors with confidence.

What is Pilates, Anyway? (And How is it Different from Yoga?)

This is the most common question we get! While both are amazing for your mind and body, they have different focuses.

  • Pilates (Mat & Reformer): Think of Pilates as the architect for your body. The focus is on building a strong, stable foundation from your deepest core muscles. It involves precise, controlled movements that improve posture, build lean muscle, and create incredible stability.

  • Yoga (e.g., Hatha, Yin, Vinyasa): Think of Yoga as the artist for your body. The focus is on flowing between postures, linking movement with breath. It’s fantastic for improving flexibility, balance, and reducing stress, creating a deep connection between your mind and body.

At Awaken, you don't have to choose. Many of our members find that a mix of both gives them the perfect balance of strength and stillness.

The Big Question: Reformer Pilates vs. Mat Pilates?

You’ve seen the videos: the sliding "reformer" machines look high-tech (and maybe a little complex). But what's the difference between that and a class just on the mat?

Mat Pilates: Your Foundation

This is where the Pilates method was born. Using just your own body weight (and sometimes props like rings or balls), Mat Pilates is the ultimate test and teacher of core control.

  • Best for: Building raw core strength from the ground up, understanding the fundamentals of Pilates breathing and movement.

  • What it feels like: Challenging, grounding, and incredibly empowering. You’ll be amazed at what your body can do.

Reformer Pilates: Your Next Level

The reformer machine uses springs, straps, and a sliding carriage to create resistance or assistance. This is its magic. It can make an exercise more challenging, or it can support your body to help you achieve movements you couldn't on the mat.

  • Best for: All levels (from beginners to athletes), building long, lean muscles, low-impact toning, and anyone needing extra support for joints.

  • What it feels like: A full-body, low-impact workout that feels both supportive and intense. It’s famous for that "Pilates burn."

The Verdict: You can't go wrong. We recommend beginners try both! Our Free Trial is the perfect way to see which one your body loves most.

Your First Class: What to Expect at Awaken

Okay, you're ready to book. Here’s a quick rundown of what your first visit will look like.

1. The Vibe: Community Over Competition

The most important thing to know is that we are a judgment-free zone. Our instructors are there to guide you, not push you. You'll be welcomed into a small group class where everyone is on their own journey. We're here to help you move with purpose and reconnect with yourself.

2. What to Wear & Bring

  • Wear: Comfortable, fitted activewear. You want clothes you can move and stretch in freely, but not so baggy that they get in the way.

  • Bring (Reformer): Grip socks are essential for Reformer Pilates for safety and hygiene. We sell them in the studio if you forget!

  • Bring (Mat/Yoga): We have mats, but you are always welcome to bring your own.

  • Always: A water bottle and a small towel.

3. During the Class

Your instructor will guide you through every single movement. They will always offer modifications—options to make a move gentler or more challenging. The golden rule is to listen to your body. This is your time.

Beyond the Class: Your Space to Recharge

We're more than just a place to work out. We're a complete wellness hub.

  • 24/7 Studio Access: Life is busy. That's why we offer 24/7 access and Reformer On-Demand, so you can move on your schedule, not ours.

  • Infrared Sauna: The perfect way to end your session. Our private saunas help reduce muscle tension, support detoxification, and give you a peaceful moment to unwind.

  • Find Us: With beautiful, modern studios in Yanchep, Ashby, and Mindarie, your local space to "awaken" is just around the corner.

Quick-Fire FAQ for Beginners

Q: Am I "fit enough" to start Pilates? A: Absolutely. Pilates is designed for all levels. Our instructors will help you find the right modifications for your body.

Q: How often should I come to see results? A: We recommend 2-3 classes per week. You'll likely feel a difference (better posture, less stiffness) after your first few classes and see a difference in a matter of weeks.

Q: Will Pilates or Yoga help me lose weight? A: When combined with a healthy lifestyle, both are fantastic for building lean muscle, which in turn boosts your metabolism. More importantly, they help you build a positive, consistent relationship with movement, which is the key to long-term health.

Q: What's the best class for toning? A: Reformer Pilates is famous for its ability to sculpt and tone the entire body, creating long, lean muscles.
